August 21, 2024

Horizon Europe (2021-2027) is the current framework of the European Commission.

## ERC Synergy Grants (ERC-2025-SyG)

The European Research Council (ERC), under the European Commission, provides funding to excellent investigators and their research teams to pursue ground-breaking and ambitious research. Research funded by the ERC is expected to lead to advances at the frontiers of knowledge and to set a clear and inspirational target for frontier research across Europe. The European Commission has set aside €16B for ERC awards under Horizon Europe (2021-2027). Each Synergy Grant can be up to a maximum of €10M for a period of 6 years, with up to an additional €4M to cover [certain eligible costs](https://erc.europa.eu/apply-grant/synergy-grant#:~:text=in%20Horizon%20Europe-,How%20much?,-Synergy%20Grants%20can). Please note that **all** European Commission proposals require submission through [Harvard Global](/harvard-global).

The ERC has released its [Work Programme for the 2025 Synergy Grant cycle](https://ec.europa.eu/info/funding-tenders/opportunities/docs/2021-2027/horizon/wp-call/2025/wp_horizon-erc-2025_en.pdf), with applications due by **November 6, 2024 at 17:00 Brussels time (due by Monday, October 29 for School-level and Harvard Global review)**. ERC Synergy Grants are the only ERC funding mechanism which allows for one of the PIs to be based at a US host institution. ERC Synergy Principal Investigators that are based in the US are required to devote **at least 30% effort** (including summer months, total working time) to the project. To learn more about the call for proposal, visit the [EU Funding and Tenders Portal](https://ec.europa.eu/info/funding-tenders/opportunities/portal/screen/opportunities/topic-details/ERC-2025-SyG?order=DESC&pageNumber=1&pageSize=50&sortBy=startDate&isExactMatch=true&status=31094501,31094502&frameworkProgramme=43108390&callIdentifier=ERC-2025-SyG).

If your faculty are interested in applying as part of an EU-based group of PIs, please reach out to Peggy Darnowsky ([Peggy\_Darnowsky@harvard.edu](mailto:Peggy_Darnowsky@harvard.edu)) or Krister Anderson (<sponsored@harvardglobal.org>) at Harvard Global soon as possible.
