To ensure compliance with federal regulations and university policies, certain activities within a sponsored project require the University’s review and formal approval before submitting a proposal, setting up an award in GMAS, and throughout the award’s lifecycle. Common examples of these approvals include work with human or animal subjects, cost sharing, and international activities.

Activities requiring formal approval are flagged in GMAS and are reviewed by the relevant Harvard office responsible for that function. The information linked in this section provides details on each approval type, when it is needed in the project lifecycle, and which office is responsible for granting approval.
